Steel City Puppies February 2025 Updates

FaceBook Jail

So after about 2 months in “Facebook Jail”, they have finally released me and are allowing me to post in groups again. I do not know if they will continue flagging old posts and ban me again. To prevent future issues, I am going to keep my wording and captions as minimal as possible on Facebook posts. I hate to do that because I enjoy posting informational content, but I don’t want to risk another ban. You can always visit our Instagram to keep up with us.

Availability

For our Jean and Argo litter, we only have Miss Kendall left available. She is super playful, outgoing, and loving. She needs a family that is able to get her out and play, not someone that likes staying home all day. She is extremely sweet and smart! Adult size should be roughly 20 lbs.

For our Heidi and Freddy mini bernedoodles, we may have one or two become available after Puppy Selection Day, February 22nd. They are estimated to mature at 30 lbs.

Summer Break

After our current litters, we only have 2 petite/ teacup goldendoodle litters on the way. Both fully reserved. We are taking the Summer to make some much needed repairs and improvements in our home. The puppy’s sunroom is getting a complete overhaul currently!

New Business

We just launched a new branch of our farm business, Grass Puppies Encounters! Through social media you get to see all the adorable animals on the farm, and now you have the opportunity to meet them! We have remodeled our 6 stall barn, and we are loading it up with the most adorable baby animals for you to play with. From the mini cows to the yaks to the baby goats to the emu chicks, and more! Animals can rotate monthly to even weekly as new babies are born on the farm! This is a luxury/ VIP experience, not your basic petting zoo, and the prices reflect that. Holidays will have premium pricing, but regular admission will run $79 a person. We will also have options for private parties.

Future Litters

Per usual, I have an amazing lineup of litters for the end of the year. We have petite and mini goldendoodles, mini Australian Bernedoodles, and I will probably be adding a medium/standard bernedoodle or Golden Mountain Doodle litter.

*Remember! If you want a particular gender, color, etc. you want to get on the wait list early! The first deposits get the first picks on selection day!

Our FaceBook Page will Probably Be Shut Down Soon!

What’s Happening?

It has always been my understanding that legitimate businesses are allowed to sell animals on Facebook. If you have a website, business license, etc. then you are permitted. I still have avoided using certain phrases like “For Sale” and “Contact Me for Pricing”. However, Facebook is using new AI technology that has more key phrases they are looking for, flagging, and removing. It is affecting many in the industry. Every day they are flagging old posts and my page is now “At RIsk”. I believe if they keep finding more old posts, then they will deactivate the page, but I’m not going to spend a week of my time deleting everything I have posted. If anyone has a shortcut on how to do this in a way that does not take a lot of time, please let me know. If it does get removed, then I do plan on starting a new SCP page that will avoid all possible flaggable words.

Where Can You Find Us?

So far, our Instagram page has not been flagged at all. I will continue posting stories and posts on there. Our Website is the easiest way to see current availability. If we have issues on Instagram as well, then I will just upload to TikTok more often.

What Puppies Do You Have Available?

We are down to our last 3 puppies for 2024! One mini Australian Labradoodle and two mini goldendoodles, all boys. It will be several months before we have any others ready to go home.

What Puppies Do You Have Upcoming?

We have a mini Goldendoodle Mountain Doodle and mini Bernedoodle litter due January 2025. They will be stunning! After them, we have a teacup and petite goldendoodle litter planned for early Spring before a break.

The Break

After the litters mentioned above, we will probably have a 3-6 month break with no puppies. I am starting a new business venture, and I would like to devote a good amount of energy to get it off the ground. Our house has also taken a beating with nonstop puppies in it for 4 years, so we have lots of repairs, painting, etc. to do.

The Future

I am Very excited about what the future holds! It has taken so much work to get to this point in our program of really having nothing but exceptional puppies. Over the years, I have learned and eliminated any negative traits that were showing up the bloodlines. They have been crafted for perfection. My #1 goal is creating puppies with great temperaments, striking beauty, that go on to live 15+ year healthy lives. So stay tuned on future Facebook news and more than likely I will go ahead and create a backup page.

Do you worry about your puppies ending up in Shelters or Rescues?

First I would like to state I do not believe all dog breeders should have to do all of the things mentioned below. I believe in personal responsibility. If a person brings a dog to a shelter/rescue, that is on them and not the breeder of the dog. However, I love the puppies I produce, and thinking of them being homeless is a terrible thought to me.

Applications and Screening

The process to get a Steel City Puppy is not as simple as “Meet me in the Walmart parking lot with cash, and I will give you the puppy.” Every potential owner must fill out an application on my website. This application lets me screen for any red flags. Anything I see that is not compatible with a brand new puppy or adult dog will be brought up to the applicant. Yes, there are plenty applicants that get rejected. If I am unsure what to do, but the applicant listed who referred them, I will reach out to the referee. My ultimate goal is happy dogs and owners!

Honesty and Transparency, Puppy-Matching

My priority will always be having a happy dog and owner relationship, not making a sale. If a puppy is high energy, low energy, bitey, barky, etc. I will let you know. If I think a certain puppy will not do well in your home, I will let you know. I believe this is one of the main reasons we have only ever had 5 puppies “Returned” over the past 5 years. Several of those were actually due to life changes and not because of the puppy.

Pricing

The funny thing is we get so much “hate” for high pricing, but it is actually one of the key factors in preventing dogs from being placed in a shelter/rescue. When you are paying several thousand dollars for a puppy, you are invested into that puppy. The average American does not spend that much money on a whim. They are showing they value what we have to offer. A $50 puppy is much much more likely to end up in a shelter than a $3500 puppy.

Contract

It is in our Sales Agreement that every puppy must be returned to Steel City Puppies, if they are ever no longer wanted. If they have a friend or family they would like the puppy/dog to go to, that friend/family does get priority, but I also require a new application from that friend/family.

Microchip

Every single Steel City Puppy is microchipped. If they are ever lost, they will be scanned at the Shelter/Rescue, and the owner and/or I will be reached out to.

Forever Home

Most of our buyers get to see how their puppy is raised here with daily pictures/videos. From the day they are born, to when their eyes open, to when they walk for the first time, bark for the first time, eat puppy food for the first time, etc. They know I love what I do. Why would they ever surrender their Steel City Puppy to a sad shelter when they know they have a forever home here? Unless they have no heart and do not want what is best for their puppy… However, we have amazing owners that would never do that and who know their dog always has a home here.

Adopt Don't Shop! GREEDER! Mutts!!!

Have you ever wondered why people are so adamant about you not buying a puppy from a breeder? Why they want you to feel shame? Meanwhile, others are fine if you buy from a breeder, but it must only be a Purebred Puppy, no mixed breeds! Let’s break it down.

Nobody should own any dogs!

This is probably the smallest group and usually linked to PETA, but there are some people that believe no animals should be owned by humans. They believe it is inhumane and all animals have as much worth as humans, even the cockroaches. Being such a small sect, with ideals set so far apart from mine, I will not dive deeper into this belief set in this post but focus on the more common beliefs.

Adopt Don’t Shop!

Next, there is a group that believes no one should buy a puppy from a breeder. There are thousands or millions of dogs in shelters and rescues that all need homes. Ok, let’s play out this situation, meet their demands, and see what happens. Breeding dogs is outlawed around the world, in around 17 years or so, domesticated dogs are extinct. Is that what you want? No one to have pets? However, more than likely if you outlaw dog breeding a black market for dogs will develop, is that what you want? Why not support adopting and responsible breeding?

Adopt Don’t Shop, unless from a Reputable Purebred Breeder

For this group I just have one simple question, what is a Purebred Dog? Is a Golden Retriever a purebred dog? Fun fact: Golden Retrievers were created in the late 1860s by crossing flat coated retrievers with tweed water spaniels plus other breeds. That sounds kind of mixed, not very pure to me. I wonder if people back in the 17th century were yelling at Lord Tweedmouth for creating this monstrosity that would later be known as one of the most lovable dog breeds, the Golden Retriever. How about in the 1500s-1600s when some unknown breed of water dogs were bred with Newfoundlands to create the Labrador Retriever we have today? But where did Newfoundlands come from? Also, around the same time period they were believed to have been made from crossing Pyrenees with Portuguese Water Dogs and possibly other breeds as well. Do you get the point? Your “PureBreeds” are about as pure as a Goldendoodle.

“Yeah, yeah, but your goldendoodles are not bred to any standard.” Some of these purebreeds took hundreds of years to develop their standard, and the goldendoodle has only been around for 35 years or so. But, there is actually an organization named GANA that has set a standard for goldendoodles: https://www.goldendoodleassociation.com/about-gana/.

What You Should Care About Regarding Dog Breeding

1) How the parents and puppies are treated. Fresh water, high-quality food, vet care, grooming, proper shelter, and a happy life including a loving family.

2) Genetic Health-Testing. It is irresponsible for people to be breeding today without proper genetic health-testing. Many diseases and suffering can be prevented by screening breeding dogs for diseases.

3) Temperament. Depending on the breed and the intended purpose of the puppies, the parents should have the proper temperament. You don’t want to breed aggressive golden retrievers that are intended to be playmates with kids. You don’t want to breed Pyrenees that have a high prey drive and enjoy killing animals.

Bonus: Home-Screening. If you tell me you will be in an office 8 hours a day and the puppy will be alone at home that entire time, then I will tell you I do not think you are the right fit. Anything in your application that sends a red flag to me, that makes me think you will not be a right match, I will let you know.

Bonus #2: Forever Home. I’m not saying this has to be offered to be a quality breeder, but at Steel City Puppies I will take back any of my puppies at any age and in any condition. My puppy owners sign a contract saying they must be returned to me and never placed in a shelter or rescue.

What You Should Not Care About Regarding Dog Breeding

The Price of My Puppies. You have all of these demands on what makes a responsible breeder, but do you not understand how expensive that is? We can easily run up $10,000 in expenses a month on my 5 dogs alone and their puppies. Now, do you prefer the puppies to be cared for 24/7 or do you want them to be left alone 9-5 while I am working another job? Can I buy some health insurance? Do you want puppies to be raised in a tiny house on a tiny lot of land? You can’t have it both ways. In order for puppies to be given 24/7 care, a wonderful place to grow up, the best food, the best vet care, the best grooming, genetic health testing on all adults, breeding dogs from the best bloodlines… all requires lots and lots of $$$$.

Summary

1) You come across as angry and unhappy when you take time out of your day to tell others “Adopt Don’t Shop” and “Stop Breeding”… Nobody likes angry and unhappy people that like telling others what to do, well except for other miserable people.

2) If I’m happy, my dogs are healthy and happy, and my customers are happy… then you are the only one with a problem.

3) Research more. What you call Purebreds are not so “pure”. They have just had more time to be refined, but at one point in time were the result of crossing many breeds.

Does your Puppy/Dog need Health Insurance?

A common question I get from new puppy owners is should I buy pet insurance and what kind. The honest answer is this is more of a financial question than anything else. Some questions to consider:

1) Do you know the history/ background of your puppy or dog? An unknown history is always a risk for health complications. You can do a DNA health check, like Embark, to get some answers, but of course this is not a complete check of all genetic issues possible in a dog.

2) Are health issues common in the breed? https://www.forbes.com/advisor/pet-insurance/dog-breeds-highest-risk-health-problems/

3) Can you afford a $2,000-$3,000 vet bill? If you are able to set $3,000 aside in a savings account for emergencies, this is my favorite option and really takes away the need for pet health insurance.

If your puppy is coming from a reputable breeder and the breed is not known for having many genetic health issues, then I suggest putting the premiums you would be spending into a High Yield Savings account, like Ally Bank. Let’s go with $30 a month, auto-drafted from your account, and you will be saving up $360 a year that will grow interest. Of course, you must have the financial discipline to not use this money for vacations or non-pet emergencies.

My experiences with Vet Bills:

Outside of Vaccines and Breeding related trips, we are very rarely at the vet. I would say the #1 health issue people would have with our puppies specifically is an ear infection. Most puppies get it once or twice within the first 4 years of life, but if you have a reasonable vet, this should be a $150 or less vet bill. The most expensive “common” procedure is ingestion of a foreign body. Puppies can eat socks, toys… well basically anything. Vets will not go directly to surgery, but if they must go to surgery, you could be looking at a $1000-$2000 bill from my experience. The most common costly medical expense over time is allergies. Cytopoint injections can run $100-$200 each and can be needed every 4-8 weeks.

How Insurance Works:

Every company is going to do it a little different, but most are flexible and your selections will decide your Premium. For beginners I will briefly review the basic terms.

Premium: What you will pay the company every month no matter what. Expect it to range from $20-$60 a month per dog.

Deductible: The amount of vet bills you must cover yourself before the insurance will pay anything.

Annual Limit: The maximum amount the insurance company will pay per year.

Reimbursement Rate: The percentage of the covered amount the insurance will reimburse you for.

Scenario: Let’s say you have a $20 a month premium, deducible of $500, Limit of $2,500, and reimbursement rate of 80%. Your puppy is healthy all year, but in December swallows a bunch of socks and needs a $1000 surgery. What will you have paid total this year and what will insurance pay? Insurance is going to pay $500 to the vet because that is the bill minus your $500 deductible. You will have paid $240 in premiums plus the $500 deductible to the vet, resulting in a total of $740 for the year. As you can see, pet insurance really only makes sense if your puppy or dog is prone to accidents or health issues.

Summary: Once again, if you are worried about your pet’s medical expenses my top recommendation is just saving money aside for emergencies. The exception being if your specific puppy or dog is prone to accidents or illness, or if the breed is known for genetic issues.

Which Pet Insurance Company to Use?

As I have no experience using them, I can not give an official recommendation. Do your own research. Check out NerdWallet: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/insurance/best-pet-insurance-companies

A Decade Long Breeder's Top 5 Tips for New Puppy Owners

I have seen it all, from the best-behaved puppies in the world to absolute nightmares. Below are my top 5 Tips for New Puppy Owners.

1. Get Them Out!

You want a recipe for a terrible dog? Get an 8 week old puppy and never leave the house with them for the next 2-3 months. People do not understand the importance of the early developmental stages of a puppy. If the loudest noise they have ever heard is the oven beeping or the front door shutting, loud noises could be an issue as they grow up. If they spend their first 3 months never seeing a child, they can develop a fear of children. Your puppy needs positive experiences with many different stimuli from a very young age. Yes, people will try to make you deathly afraid of all of the viruses and bacteria in public, but just use common sense in your judgement. Your dog needs to play with other dogs before 16 weeks old. I board my past puppies, and I can 100% tell the dogs that have been properly socialized and those that have not been.

2. Get the Second Dog

Haha, I know people are going to have an issue with this one, but there is just about no better gift to your dog than another dog. Being a dog breeder and owning a farm has shown me the importance of companionship in social animals. Every day I get to see cattle grooming each other, licking each other’s faces, donkeys and horses nibbling on each other’s necks, chickens exploring with their cliques, bunnies cuddling, and doodles always by each other’s side. As much as you think you are your dog’s optimal companion, you are not as good of a match as another dog. Will your dog love you any less or bond less to you? No, and they will also have a huge decrease in separation anxiety with a doggy sibling. Don’t read this if you are a boarding client, but dogs that live in home with no other dogs are always the most difficult to care for. How hyper they are is up, odds of not getting along with others is up, being afraid of their own shadow is up. In general, the less desirable traits are almost always found in “only child” dogs. It is critical that the 2nd dog is added within in a certain time frame, within 2 years of the first puppy is optimal. If you wait too long, I have seen dogs not adjust well to the addition of a new dog, and they can have already turned their bad behaviors into habits. I am not trying to sell you a dog, merely report that the happiest, best behaved dogs I have seen, come from multi-dog families.

*** ”But I can’t afford a 2nd dog or do not have the space.” In this instance, your best bet is a ton of social activities for your dog. Going to the park 3-5 times every week, walks in the neighborhood, playdates with other dogs, etc. Isolation for your puppy is the absolute worst thing for development.

3. Feed Them Well

I understand it is extremely difficult to know how to take care of your puppy when there are thousands of different food options, and everyone has a different opinion. Between your breeder, the veterinarian, the internet, your neighbor, etc. everyone thinks they know best. My best piece of advice is to read the ingredient labels. Do you want your dog consuming “Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate” or “Corn Gluten Meal” or “Red 40”? Use common sense. A dog’s main diet should consist of Real Meat.

Feed them crap, and you can see Allergies, Hot Spots, Bad Breath, Bone/Joint Disease, Obesity, Lethargy, Dull Coat.

Read your Ingredients!

4. Do Basic Training

I don’t know of anyone that regrets training their puppy. The sooner your puppy understands they get rewarded for good behavior, the better. You must remember, whatever you allow them to get away with as a puppy, they will continue to do as adults. It is not so bad when a 5 lb puppy jumps up on your leg, but it is not near as much fun when they grow up and 50 lb dogs are jumping on little kids. Basic training classes are not expensive and do not require a ton of time. Do the training.

5. Spend Some Time Apart

You do not need to spend all day, every day with your new puppy. You also do not need to leave them for 6+ hours, but you do need some time apart. This is a tough one because it goes back to Tip #2. You must understand pack animals find great comfort being with their pack. Psychologically, a young puppy knows they are vulnerable if alone. In nature, they would have their canine parents to protect them and siblings to comfort them. The issue is when you only have a single dog, we have to break this instinct to make them a well-rounded puppy. Sad, I know. However, if you do not teach a new puppy how to self-soothe and be comfortable alone, you are going to have many issues in the future. Dogs need to go to the vet, the groomer, to be boarded, etc. You need to go to work, the grocery store, on vacations, etc. so it is very important your puppy can handle being alone. Google has many different tips to help you with how to do this, but the simplest way is just spending time apart starting day one. The puppy can be in a different room than you for 30 minutes, then the next day 1 hour, etc. Provide them with toys and treats in that room. Work gradually, increase the time apart at your own pace, the most important thing is for your dog to learn it is ok if you are not with them all the time.

Of course there are many more elements to raising an amazing puppy, but these are 5 I feel need more attention. I’ve raised nearly one thousand puppies, boarded hundreds of them, and I get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Follow these 5 tips and you will be headed in the right direction for an amazing companion!

Fall 2023 Steel City Puppy Updates!

Hi There!

A lot has changed in the “Doodle World” in the past year, so I would like to explain how SCP is adapting and the exciting litters we have upcoming!

The Declining Market

In the past, I would say about 18 months, the puppy market, in general, has completely flipped. Covid led to a huge spike of demand, then new breeders popped up everywhere increasing the supply, and now the supply is outweighing the demand. You can now see AKC papered purebreds going for $500 or less. I even see some people giving away AKC labs. How has this affected what we are doing at SCP?

First of all, I do not want to create puppies if it will be difficult to find them homes. Because of this, we have recently retired about 40% of our females and are skipping many heat cycles. The alternative would be to cut prices drastically, but then have to produce a lot more puppies, which is what some breeders are doing, but that is not what I want to do. We are only breeding our most popular breeds, and still having to cut 2022 prices by around 25% just to be competitive.

Our Philosophy- Inside the Head of the Breeder

My #1 concern is creating the highest quality puppy, with a sound temperament, that can fit into any family, and will live a long, healthy life. Your daily expenses are going up, and ours have skyrocketed as well. Our average cost to raise a puppy (with us working for 100% free) is over $2000 per puppy. I could easily decrease this by: feeding our dogs and puppies a low quality food, skipping vet exams, skipping vaccines or doing them myself, making the moms breed more litters before retiring, using the cheapest bloodlines I can find, raising the puppies in kennels outside instead of our home, skipping all health testing on the parents, and the list goes on and on. We have invested a lot of time and money into our puppies to make them the highest quality and to give them the best life. This is the difference in a $500 and a $3000 puppy.

Advertising

Over the past 3 years or so, Facebook and Instagram have stopped putting our posts in newsfeeds, even in our followers feeds. This is the case for the majority of business pages because they are wanting businesses to pay for exposure and advertising. We used to find around 30% of our customers through social media, and now that has dropped to about 5%. We are 95% word of mouth/ referral today. As a thank you, we are now offering $100 Visa Virtual Gift Cards to the referrer, as long as they are mentioned in the application, after the deposit is paid.

Discounts

We have 2 new discounts we are excited to offer! Only one discount per puppy.

$250 off for repeat SCP Customers

$250 off for military/ veterans

Upcoming Litters

We are expecting Heidi and Jay’s mini Golden Mountain Doodles October 7th! This litter was just confirmed via ultrasound! Yay! I would describe these puppies as the best all-around. Not too lazy, not too hyper. Not too outgoing, not too shy. I expect them to be middle of the road, level-headed puppies that will fit into 95% of families’ lifestyles.

We just finished breeding Cardi and Argo for mini Golden Mountain Doodles that will be due in November and ready by Jan 6, 2024. The color combinations they can produce are simply breath-taking. Argo is younger than I like to breed males, but his genetics are simply perfect for Cardi. For this reason I also let Ollie, Argo’s dad, breed Cardi at the end of her cycle just to increase our odds of a successful pregnancy. I recommend these puppies for families that are more home than away. Very loving puppies that need attention.

Golden Mountain Doodles… Why?

A GMD is a combination of poodle, Bernese mountain dog, and golden retriever. The first answer as to why is because I do not want to be limited on the availability of genetics I can use, aka Goldendoodles should only breed to Goldendoodles. Each of the dogs in our breeding program has strengths and weaknesses. Other than JellyBean, who is perfect. Let’s say I have a goldendoodle who is too high energy for my liking, but is perfect in every other way. If I have a super calm bernedoodle stud, then I could breed them together. More than likely, some may get the higher energy from the mom, but I could keep back the calmest puppy to continue the bloodline. This is why we have Australian Labradoodle in a lot of our bloodlines because they are naturally calmer and have amazing coats. Another example is bernedoodles tend to have more hip laxity than other doodles, leading to higher odds of hip dysplasia as they age. If I have a goldendoodle with very strong, tight hips then I want to have him as an option. I am looking at over 50 factors/ traits when deciding who breeds and who does not, and who gets paired with whom.

Other Upcoming Breedings

I feel like I have to state this all the time, but I do not have the control on when a female is going to ovulate. Some females cycle every 6 months and others go beyond 12 months! Dogs do not cycle monthly like humans, cows, horses, etc.

We should have 3 goldendoodle litters coming in the next 6 months. One medium, one small mini, and one petite sized litter! All of these are open for deposit.

We are also hoping for Zoey to come in heat soon for a Small Standard sized Golden Mountain Dog litter. Stay tuned to our Facebook and/or IG for when this breeding takes place.

Fall 2023 Doodle Romp

The weather should be cooling down soon, and we hope to have another Doodle Romp/ Reunion. Date and Time TBD. Location: I am looking at the Dream Dog Park in Alabaster or Remy’s Dog Park at Red Mountain. If you have a better location, please let me know!

SPAM Bots on our FB Page

If you comment on our facebook posts, and then someone replies to your comment with a link, do not click it! I don’t know why Facebook is not doing something about this, but I delete and ban the account every time this happens. Still they have thousands of accounts and spam me every day.

Why are Doodles the Most Hated Dog?

If you have spent any time on social media, you have probably seen some anti-doodle posts. Join a dog groomer group, and you will see it every day. I believe in 2023, Doodles are the most loved and most hated of all dog “breeds”. I will explain why they are hated in this post, and you can see why they are loved in the next post. :)

***Yes, I am generalizing people into groups. All do not believe this way, but in my personal experience, the ones that do not like doodles have these reasonings.***

The “My Dog is a Rescue” Group

First, I have no issue with rescues and shelters. If you would like to get a puppy or dog from there, then 100% do it. This group, as a majority, dislike doodles because they have a scarcity mindset. The idea is there are millions of dogs in shelters, and if you buy a doodle from a breeder, then that is one less opportunity for a dog to be adopted. If you stop buying from the doodle breeder, then they will stop breeding dogs, and pet overpopulation will be under control.

The Issue. Many people who buy from doodle breeders were never going to get a puppy from a rescue or shelter. It could be because they do not want a dog that sheds, they want a particular color or size, they want a puppy that has been properly socialized from birth, or they want a puppy with parents of known history and genetic testing. I am looking at our local shelter’s available dogs right now, and it is 90+% lab, shepherd, pitbull mixes. Speaking from personal experience, in my house, I would never want a heavy shedding dog, and I believe that choice should be up to me. If you believe you could put puppy mills out of business, then you are mistaken. If anything, they will just drop their prices to make the puppies more affordable, but then need to breed more dogs to make more puppies to make the profit. They will always exist, unless legislation is passed, and that is just the truth of it.

My Recommendation. Try to differentiate between puppy mills and ethical breeders. Just because a breeder crosses different breeds does not make them automatically unethical. Some doodle breeders raise their puppies better than people raise their children, and some breeders will raise 100 puppies in a barn outside. Allow people the free choice to make whatever decision they want without shaming them.

The Purist. Purebreeds Only Please Group

The easiest way to find someone that despises Doodles is to attend a dog show. A lot of purebred dog breeders do not like doodles, doodle breeders, or doodle owners. Their main thing is to keep the bloodlines pure. There are many breeders who if a stud (male dog) has been used to cross-breed, then they will refuse to use his services. As if he is unclean now. A second reason they despise doodles is the price they are able to be sold for. You could see Champion bloodline hunting dogs selling for $500-$1000. I’ve even seen champion line Labradors for Free. Even AKC poodles, with champion bloodlines, may go for $1000-$2000. Imagine all of the work of grooming, showing, breeding for decades, and yet the neighbor down the road mixed two random dogs together, to make a doodle, and is able to sell for a higher price than you. Even though they would probably never admit it, they are just upset that mixed breed dogs can command a higher demand and price than the purebreds. Another point they will make is the inconsistency of the offspring of doodles. This is a true point, but doodle breeders that have been selectively breeding many generations have been able to create more consistency in litters.

The Issue. I hate to break it to you, but all of today’s modern dog breeds are mixes. Fun fact: there were not wild poodles roaming the earth 1,000 years ago, not even 500 years ago. When were golden retrievers “created”? 1868. How? From mixing a wavy-coated retriever to a tweed water spaniel. I am sure in 1868 there was a Karen down the road complaining that dog breeds should not be mixed. The fact that there is inconsistency is the main reason that there is such a price difference in doodles. Find a doodle breeder that has been breeding for decades, is consistently producing beautiful puppies with great hair, health, and temperament, and they are usually rewarded with higher prices. Find a breeder that is randomly throwing a lab and poodle together, and you are going to find a lower price. If people value the skill of the breeder, there should be no shame in the breeder being rewarded.

My Recommendation. Do not worry about doodle breeders or doodle owners. If you only like “Purebreds”, then you can do that without bashing doodles. If you breed Purebreds, then more power to you, but that is not a legitimate reason to dislike doodle breeders. In the end, the consumer decides the market.

The Dog Groomers Group

You would imagine all groomers love all dogs of all types, but this is not the case. I am in a few dog groomer groups, and the Doodle Hate is real. If you are selecting a groomer and get the vibe they do not like doodles, then just find another groomer. So why the hate? Well for one, the doodle owners. According to them: doodle owners are particularly difficult, have unrealistic expectations, don’t take care of their dog’s coat, and overspent on an expensive mutt. You will see many dog groomers closely tied to the Rescue Group above, and they do not like the fact you spent so much money on a mutt, when you could have went to the shelter. I will agree with them on some of their other points. Not all doodle owners are keeping up with their dog’s coat and will let them get matted. Some doodle owners expect certain haircuts, but their doodle has a completely different coat type and texture that makes the look they want impossible. As far as the actual doodles go, the groomers will say: crazy, neurotic, and the worst breed they groom. For every 1 great doodle breeder out there, there are probably 3 mediocre ones, and 6 puppy mills. So I do not deny that they may be encountering some crazy ones. Fun Fact: there are some groomers refusing to accept doodles and others adding an extra “Doodle Fee” to groom them.

The Issue. Say it with me, “It is OK if someone wants to use his or her money how they please and buy an expensive dog that consists of 2 or more breeds.” I am sure dog breeds of all types come in with matted and poorly kept coats, in fact I know it.

My Recommendation. Try to educate the client, offer advice, and product suggestions. If you are seeing a doodle with a ton of mats each grooming, try to offer the client a weekly or every other week bath and brush-out program. Show them the proper way to brush. Many may not listen, but all you can do is try. As you know, not all doodles are terrible. I get reports ALL the time of owners telling me how the groomer was singing their praises with how well behaved their doodle puppy was. And if the dog does have a lot of mats, I believe there should be an extra fee, but that would apply to all breeds.

The Veterinarians Group

You would imagine Veterinarians would not care about breeds, and you are basically right. I would put it as less than 5% of Veterinarians that show any issue with Doodles. Maybe they are very good at hiding it, but it is a very rare occurrence I see or hear of it. Doodles, in general, are not known for any major health problems. The #1 issue I have witnessed is allergies, but that seems to be a common problem for most breeds today. Many positive reports/studies are actually coming out about the health of doodles compared to other breeds.

The Issue. There really isn’t one. Veterinarians are not seeing doodles coming in deformed left and right, or with major health issues, so they have not shown much anti-doodle behavior.

My Recommendation. Keep it up and also Thank You.

Summary

Mixing breeds together is terrible. Adopt don’t shop. Owners do not take care of them. They are inconsistent mutts. They have terrible temperaments. People should not waste their money on them.

Bonus: Even the First Doodle Breeders Says he Regrets It

The first labradoodles were bred in 1989 by Wally Conron. Why? He needed an allergy-friendly Guide Dog, but all of the poodles he attempted to train failed. He would go on to later say he created a monster and regretted his decision. HOWEVER, it is not because of the actual dog he created (which passed the testing), but because of the puppy mills that would try to copy-cat him. Doodles being bred as a fashion accessory, not for a purpose, was his true issue.

Now would you like to hear from people that actually own doodles??? Should we not go straight to the source? Check back for that post next week! :)

Why are your Puppies so Expensive?

I know to the average person, $4,000-$5,000 can come across as an exorbitant amount for a puppy. For a low-quality puppy I would totally agree with you, but I will explain below why a Steel City Puppy cost more.

Employees

My wife and I work at “Steel City Puppies” all day, every day. There is no 9-5, no clocking out, no holidays, etc. You are paying for two full time salaries, plus more hours of overtime than you could count. It is 9:30 PM on a Thursday night as I write this very article. Keep in mind we have to pay taxes as well, so about a third of that income just goes away. We rely on what is left to pay for our mortgage, electricity, bills, food, etc. Without a decent income, we would not be able to both work the business and give our animals an amazing life, plus pay for our day-to-day.

The alternative: the dog breeder works a full-time job elsewhere, leaving the puppies alone all day. Or one spouse works and puppies only get half the attention they would with both spouses raising the puppies.

Quality Dogs

One thing about me is I always want the best. I will go for the $8,000 stud over the $1,000 stud if I believe he will produce the best puppies for my female. If I have a dog that I do not like the quality of the offspring produced, then he or she will be spayed/ neutered and retired. Reputation is very important to me, and thankfully due to our success, I have been able to purchase and use some of the best bloodlines in the business.

The alternative: I could easily lower our costs and prices if our parents dogs came from craigslist, the neighbor down the street, puppy mills, etc.

Day to Day Expenses

Our dogs get the best, it is as simple as that. Our dog food prices range from $4-$6 a pound. Our adult dogs are raw fed and get all the healthy treats and supplements. We use top-quality, expensive shampoos and conditioners for our dogs and pups. They have very nice beds, blankets, brushes, etc. It is a core foundation at Steel City Puppies that our dogs provide for us, so they will be given an amazing life.

The alternative: we use easily use an inferior $1 a pound dog food, even though this would probably lead to health issues. We could cut out all the treats and splurges our dogs get to enjoy.

Infrastructure

We purchased a large farm, outside of the city limits, just for the dogs. This was not cheap, but now they can run, play, and bark without bothering anyone. Then a very nice, expensive fence was put up to keep all the dogs secure. We also fenced in the entire property as a double layer of security. We put up a security gate to prevent unwanted visitors. The entire flooring inside the house is having to be replaced, as you can imagine carpet does not do well with puppies. :) All of our dogs and puppies are raised and live in our home and get plenty of playtime outdoors as well.

The alternative: I have seen breeders live in subdivisions and raise the puppies in their garage. It is also common for breeders to just raise their dogs in “runs” outside. The puppy mills typically just have a giant barn outside for the dogs.

Professional Services

You think your vet bills for your one or two dogs is bad, put yourself in my shoes. Haha! Think about the monthly grooming bill for 5 dogs as well. The simple fact is if our dogs or puppies have any issue, they will be taken to the vet and treated no matter the cost. We have the added cost of reproduction services, like artificial insemination. After rounds of progesterone testing, cost of semen collection and shipping, plus the stud fee, and the actual rounds of artificial insemination, our cost can be upward of $5000 to get one female pregnant. This is with no guarantee that the pregnancy will take. However, this is the cost to have and use the best bloodlines.

The alternative: our dogs and puppies could only go to the vet when absolutely necessary, if even then. Grooming is not necessary, and they will be fine if we shave them down ourselves a couple times a year.

Health Guarantee

We have a great 4 year health guarantee for inheritable diseases. Any issues our owners have, they know they can reach out to me. I want happy, healthy puppies and satisfied customers. Guaranteeing health is not free, as any reimbursments come directly out of our sales.

The alternative: no health guarantee. If you have issues with your puppy, that is not my problem and good luck to you.

Summary

Raising puppies in the way we do is not cheap. If you want a cheap/ value doodle, then we are not the right fit for you. If you want a high-quality puppy, raised in an ethical way from experienced breeders, yes we can help you out. We will not cut costs by switching to the alternatives above, and I can guarantee that.

Fall 2022 SCP Update!

Future Puppy Litters

If you haven’t noticed there are an increase in breeders, increase in puppy supply, and a flatline or decline in people purchasing puppies right now. The last thing I want to do is raise puppies that will have a hard time finding a home, so we are skipping about 50% of our female’s heats. This means in 2023 we will have half the puppies we had in 2022, if not less. Many potential litters will not be posted on our website to reserve early, and I will be making last minute decisions. If they are posted on the website, then the breeding will happen.

This means get on our lists as early as possible because we will have such a decrease in puppies next year, and if you see one pop up as available, you may want to take advantage because it could be months before we have more.

Pricing

Unfortunately with less litters, pricing will remain “above average” compared to your typical breeder. I finally just finished our 2021 Taxes, and our yearly expenses were over $200,000. It is not cheap to get the best bloodlines and raise the puppies in the way we do. Food costs are up and Veterinarian prices have increased significantly, so I expect our 2023 puppies to be $4000-$4500 each. For this price though, you are getting the best puppy ever and supporting my family being able to stay home and spend all day giving these puppies the life they deserve.

What is the Current Availability?

We have our 3 mini/ petite goldendoodle moms going in for Xrays this Wednesday to count puppies. I believe Gemma will have a couple available puppies, but that is it.

Pepper and Ollie are breeding next week for a mini Goldendoodle/ Australian Labradoodle cross.

We are waiting for Heidi and Zoey to go in heat any day.

These are really the only planned litters for the next 6 months. Most of these litters are 75% reserved as of today.

Puppy Testimonials

It has been a while since any have came in, so if you got a SCP within the last few year and do not mind, please email me one! These can help future families know a little more about SCP. They can be as short as a few sentences or as long as you would like.

Farm Animals

If you ever see anyone looking for animals for their farm, please send them our way! I have a problem accumulating too many animals, plus they keep having babies, so I need to find some a new home! Fluffy cows, goats, pigs, donkeys, you name it. Send them to our website: https://www.grasspuppies.farm/

Steel City Puppies 2021 Preview!!!

Doodle Romp 2021

romp1.jpg
romp2.jpg

We have already had an awesome reunion/romp this past weekend. It is always a great time letting the pups reunite and play. We should do another one this year when it is much warmer!

Upcoming Litters!

We currently have Stella bred with medium sized bernedoodles, and Pepper bred with small mini goldendoodles. We will be ultrasounding them for puppies within the next 2 weeks! Fingers crossed!

Next, we should have Willow breeding for mini goldendoodles and Muffy breeding for standard goldendoodles. Neither has gone in heat yet, but it should be soon! This will be Muffy’s last litter before retirement. So if you want a standard goldendoodle from Reba/ Teddy/ Muffy bloodlines this is your last opportunity!

New Training Option!

New for 2021, we have created a 2-week training program, exclusive for Steel City Puppies, to help with common puppy problems. Instead of puppies going home at 8 weeks old, they will now go home at 10 weeks if in this program. This means 2 extra weeks with mom, aunt, uncle, siblings to help create a more socialized puppy and lessen problems like nipping. Learning Sit and Stay will be included. Crate Training is not included. The program is called “Basic Manners Foundations” and is $1000.

New Transportation Option!

In 2021, we had several difficult experiences using flight nannies. The majority of flight nannies work for the airlines and can only fly stand-by. So, if there are no extra seats available, your puppy is not getting on that flight. Then your puppy is stuck with a stranger for who knows how long until they can find another flight. So I have taken matters into my own hands, and if you would like your puppy driven or flown to you by the owner of Steel City Puppies we have the VIP (Very Important Puppy) Delivery. The cost of this service is $1000 for transport to any major airport in the USA.

Steel City Doodles®

In the future, we are going to have a lot more puppies with several breeds mixed in. So many that “Creating” a name for them would just be silly. For example, we will probably breed Ridlee to Sus, and I would prefer not to call them Australian BerneCavapoos. Haha. In this case, they will just be identified as Steel City Doodles®, and I will highlight them as being an Australian Labradoodle, Bernedoodle, and Cavapoo cross. Yes, they are just mutts, mixes, mongrels (if you prefer that term) to some, but to me they are all matched for a reason. Each breed and each parent bringing something different to the table that I think will help create the perfect puppies. So in the future when you see me start using the term Steel City Doodles just know it is a custom blend of several breeds.

The Disappointing News

We have actually have had great luck lately, but everything can’t be perfect. As you may know, we test our adults for diseases like hip dysplasia. Romeo and Hugh, two of our hopeful future studs, were tested over the past several months and did not pass their pennHips. This does not mean they have hip dysplasia, but that they are more likely to produce offspring with dysplasia than the average adult of their breed. We are going to get second opinions before deciding what to do, but of course, this is not the news we wanted.

The Exciting News

The great news is in 2020 we had several adults pass their genetic testing. Harley just passed hers. Sus passed the DNA portion and has the perfect coat genes that we need. Then the other exciting news is we just got a new little stud Muffin, Chip! He will hopefully sire our mini and petite goldendoodles next year!

Check Your Spam Folder

I guess due to the number of emails I send a day of like nature, many platforms are sending my emails to the Spam folder. So if you do not get a response from me within 4 days, check your spam, and if you still can not find a response, message me again.

Available Puppies in 2021

We have very limited availability left for the year.

Standard Bernedoodles- If Stella has a nice sized litter, then we should have one or two available soon.

Mini Bernedoodle- This will be Stella’s second litter and we are not taking deposits yet. Very end of 2021.

Petite Bernedoodle- All sold out. Probably beginning of 2022 before available.

Standard Goldendoodle- Last planned litter of Standards and will be Muffy’s retirement litter. Due around April. Very Limited Availability.

Mini Goldendoodle- Rosie should be having some around September, these are larger minis. Limited Availability. Gemma and the Beans probably all sold out until early 2022. Willow probably won’t have any available until early 2022.

Small Mini Goldendoodle- Pepper’s next available litter will probably be around October 2021, but we will not start taking deposits until her current litter is born. Cardi possibly could have a litter this year, but we are not taking names until she has more health testing.

Petite Goldendoodles- Ember has no availability. When JellyBean breeds, those already on Ember’s list will have first access.

Medium Australian Labradoodles- Only one litter, and it will be around July 2021. Several spots open.

Cavapoos- The moms must pass their health testing first before we take deposits. Then we are looking at a possible Summer litter and maybe end of the year litter.

7 RED FLAGS when Choosing a Dog Breeder

6696c9993bab47bd49c777ba9fbcbc12_scam-stamp-3.png

Scams are everywhere. Terrible breeders are everywhere. How do you know if you can trust a breeder, especially in a world where most Puppy Sales are done online?

  1. Google Them. Complaint Boards, BBB, Etc. can help point out some bad breeders. However, a breeder can easily change their business name to escape their bad reviews, so watch out for this. On the other hand, if you can find tons of positive reviews and a great following this is a good sign.

  2. What Photos and Videos are you sent? Are they stock photos? Or only photos in front of one backdrop? Can you see any evidence of how and where the puppies are raised? Your average puppy mill today will have their puppies living in filth, but then every couple weeks have them bathed and fluffed just so they can get photos to sell them. If it is unclear how a puppy is being raised, then that is a Red Flag. Instagram stories are a great tool used today to show how puppies are being raised.

  3. On this same note, do not think a breeder that does not allow random home visits has something to hide. How would you like it if someone different came to your house every day to just have a look around? However, the Red Flag would be if a breeder refuses to let you visit and see where the puppies are raised even when you are there to Pick Up. If the breeder is adamant about meeting Off-Site, Red Flag.

  4. No photos of the parent dogs online. If a breeder does not have the moms and dogs listed on their website there is a reason.

  5. Do they give you a bad feeling in your gut? Trust your intuition. If they seem slimy or scammy, just find another breeder. I have also had experiences with a lot of them that are just mean and rude, and if I am saying that then they must have been bad.

  6. They are not knowledgeable about genetics, grooming, canine nutrition, etc. When you are spending thousands of dollars on a puppy you want to find a breeder that knows what they are doing and has put a lot of effort into their program. If they do not know the basics and are not growing by learning, then find another breeder.

  7. And most importantly, the Red Flag of them not being passionate. Do they love what they are doing? Do they love puppies or just see them as a source of income? A passionate breeder is going to put that passion into their program and it will show.

If you have hesitations about a Breeder, just keep looking and find a different one. If you think you are getting a “Great Deal” on a puppy because they are half the price of all the other breeders just know there is probably a reason for this.

Why is my Puppy's Expected Due Date Wrong? The basics of litter timing.

Every breeder does their wait lists, deposits, etc. a little different. Some will take deposits years in advance and others don’t take deposits until pups are born. At Steel City Puppies, we take deposits when we are confident a breeding and litter will happen. I provide an estimated time period the pups should be born, but this is not a guarantee. Hopefully, this post will help you understand more about Canine Pregnancy and Timing.

canine-heat-cycle-hormones.gif

Estrus “Heat” Cycles

Female humans, typically, cycle every 28 days. This means they ovulate about every 28 days, and that is the time when they can get fertile and are receptive to sperm. Fun fact, Goats are pretty similar with cycling around every 21 days. Unfortunately, dogs do not have heat cycles but every 6-7 months on average. The even less fortunate fact is that some bitches do not cycle every 6-7 months, but every 8, 9, 10, up to 20+ months. It is rare for the timing to be more than 12 months between cycles, but we have a few bitches that do. The even less less fortunate fact is they are not always consistent. So a bitch can go 6 months between cycles, and then 9 months before she cycles again, and then 7 months before cycling again. In other words, dogs are not always consistent in their reproduction timing.

The Most Difficult to Predict

The litters that are always the hardest for me to predict are a bitch’s first litter. The reason being, as long as the mom is of proper age, we usually breed her on her second Estrus Cycle. This means I only have her first cycle to go by, and it could be anywhere from 6-12+ months before she cycles again. After a mom has 3 litters, however, I can generally see a trend form and then get within +/- one month. Of course she is going to retire soon, so a lot of good it does me.

How I Predict Estimated Due Dates

I’ve been doing this long enough that there are some unseen factors, intuition through experience you could say, that help me estimate estrus cycles. Fun fact, it also seems to be that a daughter will have similar timing between cycling as her mother. I take into account the timing of the mother, maybe the grandmother, when she cycled first, timing between litters (if she has had some before), and also the timing of the other females in the pack. Of course I am not perfect and mistakes will be made, but it is important to remember we are dealing with forces outside my control.

The Only Guarantee

If you see on the website I have “Due Date”, instead of “Estimated Due Date” that means the mom has actually been bred. So she actually delivers pups around this day or we have an even longer wait than expected. because the pregnancy did not take. We know the exact days our females ovulate, so once this happens I can pretty much always get the due date correct +/- one day. The gestation period of a dog is 63 days, so that is really the only time period I can be accurate in, is 63 days pre-birth.

“Did you move my litter back?”

Most people do not understand the basics of canine reproduction and believe I can control exactly when litters will be born. So if I want Christmas puppies, then I just put the parents together 2 months ahead of time and Viola! Christmas babies! Hopefully, this post will help spread awareness that it is a waiting game. I can only breed a female when she is in heat and ovulating. This can happen 6 months from her last cycle or 12 months, there are no guarantees when it will happen. Males/Studs are always ready and able. :)

*If you see your litter’s estimated due date has been moved back that means the mom did not ovulate when “best-guessed” by me, and so it is physically impossible for her to have puppies by the original listed month.

The Different Breeder Types! Puppy Mill vs BYB vs Large Scale

puppies_cage_getty.jpg

One of the most important questions to answer when deciding to choose a breeder instead of adoption is what and whom are you supporting. If you visit a puppy mill and feel guilty leaving the puppy, so you purchase him or her just know that you are supporting that business, and they will continue being a puppy mill. Choose a breeder that you trust and one who raises their pups with the highest standard.

It is much better to wait and get the perfect puppy, then rush and buy from a puppy mill because you wanted one by Christmas.

*Below will include generalizations and my personal opinion. I am giving my testimony on what I have seen.

Puppy Mills

I would say these are the worst of the worst. These are the ones you will see being raided by the Humane Society on the nightly news. Basically, it is a ton of dogs crammed in small spaces and being bred. Conditions are not sanitary, the health needs of the animals are not met, and it is purely about profit. Lancaster, PA is a hotbed for these. The Amish may have 100+ dogs in one barn for breeding purposes. Almost all sales are done online and shipped around the country. Typically they will have someone come in when the pups are old enough, clean them up, and take decent enough pictures to sell them online. Do not expect any health testing to have been done on the parents, and possibly some may offer a 12 month health guarantee, but do not expect them to honor it.

Puppy Stores

Have you ever seen a puppy for sale in a pet store before? Yes they exist. My biggest issue is you have no idea who raised this puppy, the conditions it was raised in, and you don’t even know what the parents look like. If they say they were raised by local families in amazing conditions, blah blah blah, I highly doubt there is proof of it. There are such things as Puppy Brokers that will buy wholesale from the Puppy Mills and then disperse them around the country at these stores. So you may be at a pet store in Alabama, but that puppy drove in a large cargo van from a puppy mill in PA. These stores are also terrible for spreading infectious diseases like Parvovirus. It makes sense because you have puppies from mills and breeders all over the country coming together, increasing the risk of spread.

BackYard Breeder

This is the term thrown around the most to basically describe all breeders. I’m sure some would even consider SCP a BYB. To me, I would say it is a breeder using low-quality bloodlines, not genetic-health testing, and just after a little profit as their motivation. They don’t really know what they are doing, and they would rather use the neighbor’s dog down the street rather than finding a high-quality stud to sire the litter. Essentially they are a Puppy Mill, but on a smaller scale. Temperament, Health, and Genetics are less important than a Profit. Yes, they are much cheaper to purchase from and people don’t feel as guilty getting one from them than an actual puppy mill. Will your goldendoodle shed and develop diseases that could have been screened? Maybe. But people will see the lower price tag and take the risk. Most common on Facebook “sale pages” and Craigslist.

Large Scale “Popular” Breeders

I don’t know the official name to call these, haha, but there is usually one found in every state. They have all the IG and FB followers, first to pop up on Google, and typically have a whole staff of workers. They may have 100+ puppies at any given time and typically have the most expensive puppies. How and where their puppies are raised is not always made evident. Typically they have professional photographers and videographers, but you don’t really get to see puppies in the environment they are being raised. Genetic Health-Testing is possible. If you do not see the moms and dads on the website, or if it is not accurate then you know why. If a breeder has 70+ Breeding Adults they would not want you to know this and would not have them on their website. At the end of the day it is a business at its core and you may get an awesome puppy from them, but I personally feel they lack the intimate passion you can find in other breeders.

Medium/Large Scale Breeders

This group is probably the fastest-growing I am observing in the doodle world. Typically they have over 15 breeding dogs with the majority of them living in Guardian Homes. However, they may or not be raising the puppies themselves. Other smaller breeders or families may raise the puppies, and then they are all sold by the Medium/Large scale breeders. If you only get 3 or 4 sets of pictures and 1 or 2 videos of the puppies over the 8 weeks, then this is usually what is happening. Breeders may or may not reveal that the pups are actually being raised by other people, but you can always ask. Genetic Health Testing is common, and you can get quality pups from them. The biggest concern is the quality of the person actually raising the pups and giving them proper socialization and care.

Medium Scale Breeders

This group is identified by 6-15 breeding adult dogs and typically utilizes Guardian Homes. There is no staff and the breeder raises all of the puppies. They sell the majority of their puppies locally but do have some sparsely located across the country. The exception being maybe they live in an unpopulated area and must ship out to reach the doodle clientele. Genetic Health Testing is common. However, some will only do the DNA Genetic Testing and not the OFA hips, eyes, etc. The majority have a website and social media presence. However, if you only see photos or videos of your puppy rarely, do be wary. It is not uncommon for breeders to pretend to be medium scale when in fact they are large scale or puppy mills. An example would be they do not list or show the parents they own on their website. Another example is they may only show some of the parents they own, so people do not think they are a puppy mill. They will be taken aback by the question, but do not be afraid to ask them how many adult dogs they own.

Small Scale Breeders

Most often this group only has 2-3 females and then a male as well. It is very common for AKC breeders of show dogs to be small scale breeders. The breeder is typically retired from their main career and enjoys breeding high-quality dogs as a hobby. I love to source my bloodlines from small scale breeders, but they are not the easiest to find. The best ones have a 12+ month waitlist as well. Often they do not have a big social media presence, but would love to talk to you on the phone about their puppies. It is VERY important to differentiate between these breeders and Backyard Breeders. Backyard breeders have profit or “just wanting the experience” as their motivation, or it could have been an accidental breeding. Small scale breeders have the love of the puppies or the breed as the motivation, and want to make sure their pups are only going to great homes.

Fall 2020 Steel City Puppies Update!

Hi There!

There have been so many changes since the beginning of the year I felt like an update now instead of waiting til 2021 would be best!

Puppy Availability

We are pretty much sold out/ reserved til April 2021! Mini goldendoodles until Fall 2021! And then our petite goldendoodles (18 lbs and under) we have stopped taking names altogether, for a while, because we can not meet the demand. So first off thank you very much for the support! Not having to worry about advertising or selling pups lets me focus on raising the pups, and I appreciate that. Second, if you want a puppy from us you must get on a list well in advance especially if you have color or gender preference.

Future Breeds/ Where we are Headed

115970507_2634308436833747_2874700342446398443_o.jpg

We currently have no plans for future standard labradoodles or poodles. We only have one more planned litter of standard goldendoodles (April 2021). We will be focusing on 10-35 lb doodles in the future. Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles, and Cavapoos will make up the majority, and we may cross them together. Small and medium sized doodles that have a calmer temperament, non-shedding, and super cute! Now as a heads up with smaller moms we are going to have smaller litter sizes, so even less availability.

Emails

Please keep in mind, I am only one person and have limits. From the minute I wake up I am on the clock and working and typically don’t stop until I am sleeping. The time I have to answer emails is usually from 11 PM-Midnight, but some nights I have other things that need to get done during that time. So, please allow up to 4 Days for me to respond to emails and applications. If you have not heard from me after 4 days feel free to send a message asking if I received it. I can accidentally skip over some so checking in is fine.

We Bought a Farm!

Yes because I needed more things to do! If you remember we have long wanted to custom build a Puppy Paradise and had the land to do it. However, dealing with being in city limits, planning committees, etc. was becoming a nightmare, so we killed that plan and found a farm. We are in the Chelsea, AL area with 18 acres, fenced in pastures, barns, and a pond. In 2 months we have already acquired goats, ducks, chickens, and who knows what will be next. It is an Amazing area to raise pups, and we couldn’t be happier. Now I am busy with a thousand projects, replacing carpet, painting, etc. to make it into a Dream Home, so once again please bear with me if I am late on answering emails. lol.

Doggy Diarrhea! How to Fix It!

*Please Consult your Veterinarian if your dog has excessive vomiting and/or loose stool.

The Cause

Finding the cause for the loose stool is the first item of business. With puppies specifically, my mind first goes to intestinal parasites. Roundworms being the most common, but if you recently got a new puppy Giardia or Coccidia could also be the culprit. Drinking water from a puddle or pond is an easy way to pick up one of these bugs. A fecal slide at the Vet can check for all of these, but sometimes Giardia is difficult to find.

Also, if it is a young unvaccinated pup, then it could be Parvo. A virus that causes bloody diarrhea, lethargy, and fever. This of course needs to be treated by a Vet as soon as possible.

The pup or dog could have an intestinal blockage, which would cause diarrhea and repeated vomiting with nothing but bile coming up usually. A vet would do an Xray to check for this.

But, the most common cause of Upset Stomach I see is from transitioning kibble too fast, overfeeding, feeding something new to the pup, feeding something too rich, etc. Basically, the cause being diet-related.

What to Do

So, let’s say you can rule out intestinal parasites, which can be done by a fecal exam at the Vet. Maybe the pup vomited once, but it was yellow bile or some food. Then you remember yesterday you let the pup try a new treat for the first time. We recommend all-natural one or two ingredient chews, like Beef Tendons or Bully Sticks and these can be hard on a young dog’s stomach. Maybe the vet already closed or it is the weekend, and you want to stop the diarrhea but do not think it is serious enough to warrant an Emergency Room visit. MY Opinion, seeing blood in the feces one or two times is not by itself reason for an ER visit, but blood in vomit would probably be. If you suspect Parvo, if the pup or dog is very dehydrated, if the Pup is hacking and unable to get anything up, yes all warrant an ER visit. But for the Following suggestions we are just thinking our pup has upset stomach, the same as we get in humans.

Fast? Yes or No?

Every dog or puppy will be different. What works best for one may not work for another. A 24 hour fast is often recommended when a pup has loose stool. The idea is it lets the gut relax and focus on healing. Water is still offered, of course, and you can add some chicken broth to provide the needed electrolytes. So yes I agree this can be a solution. When introducing food do it slowly, and it is best to offer a bland diet first.

The Bland Diet

To continue to let the gut heal we want to offer a Bland Diet, with the same principle the BRAT diet humans use. My go-to is homemade chicken and sweet potato. But, chicken and rice, ground beef and sweet potato, and ground beef and rice also work. These are not “nutritionally complete” diets, but they are what we use to let the gut heal. Some veterinarians will sell you a GI prescription food, but I much prefer the homemade diet. Less ingredients, simple, and easy to digest.

Lets Get Cookin’

Ingredients:

1 lb Chicken Breast

1.5 lb Sweet Potatoes

20200525_184947.jpg

My preferred method is using a pressure cooker for the chicken. Using 1-2 lbs chicken breast, 1/2 cup water, and cook for 10 minutes. Boiling is also acceptable and then shred. For the Sweet Potatoes, I like buying the ones that can microwave and steam in the bag. Some will say to remove the skin, but I say keep it for the extra fiber. Smash it in with the shredded chicken. There is no exact science between the ratio of chicken to potato, but I keep it 50-70% potato since the #1 goal is adding fiber and firming the stool.

20200525_185000.jpg

The Topper

For added digestive enzymes, soothing herbs, probiotics, I highly recommend Gastro Pro Plus. The recommended dosage is on the box, but add a little extra when dealing with loose stool. They come sealed in individual packs and capsules to maintain freshness. You just sprinkle it on the food and most dogs love it.

Feeding Amount

This is a difficult question to answer because every dog has different caloric needs based on age, energy level, current weight, etc. There are roughly 225 calories per cup of a 50/50 Chicken and Sweet Potato mixture. So a 50 lb adult medium to low energy would get roughly 2 cups a day (half morning and half night). Remember we are only feeding this for 4-7 days, so use your best judgment on the amount.

Transitioning Back to Kibble

Number One, do it slowly. 75% homemade diet, 25% kibble. Then 50/50, then 25/75. Then 100% kibble again. If you see the stool loosen up, then slow it down. SIDE NOTE: The sweet potato can give the stool a very Orange and strange coloring look. Totally fine :) Hopefully, it will firm up, and then you will know it was just a random case of Upset Stomach.

Medication

A great antibiotic your Vet can prescribe is called Metronidazole. I always prefer a natural remedy when there is one available, but sometimes the step to antibiotics is needed. I have seen it work wonders.

How to Get Your Dog to Lose Weight feat. Reba!

*I am not a Veterinarian. All medical and health advice is given through my expertise as a pet owner and breeder, research, and personal experience.

Intro

Has your four-legged friend packed on a few extra pounds over the years? We all love spoiling our pets, but sometimes we go a little overboard. This is Reba’s story and the first part of her weight loss journey. She is a retired mom here at SCP, meaning retired from breeding. Her weight gain did not happen overnight, but slowly year after year a few pounds at a time. Pre-breeding (1-2 years old) she was around 50-55 lbs, and she topped out last month (6 years old) at 73 lbs! This is her weight loss guide.

Reba4wks.jpg

Is My Dog Overweight?

Fat-Guide.jpg

Above is one of the easiest ways to identify if your pup is a little too hefty. You should be able to count your dog’s ribs without much difficulty. Another key identifier I have seen in Doodles is a thickening at the base of the tail aka Fat Reserves. Also, if you lift the tail up are there fat wrinkles on the body where it meets the tail? If so, it is time to lose some weight!

The Foundation-Food

It is well known that for human weight loss, diet and nutrition are the most important factors, in the cases there are not medical issues. So let’s get it right, but there are so many choices! We have regular kibble, prescription kibble, raw coated kibble, fresh/frozen cooked food, dehydrated raw food, and fresh/frozen raw food, and I am sure I am still leaving some out.

What I wanted in Reba’s Food:

  • Low to No Carbs

    • We all know what Carbs do to humans, pack on the pounds. In a moderately small amount, they are not “bad” for dogs, but I would much rather fuel with Protein and Fat.

  • High Protein/ High Fat

    • The best energy sources for canines. Less inflammatory than carbs.

  • Easily Digestible and Nutritiously Dense

    • The more nutrients the body can absorb from the food, the less the dog will have to consume.

  • Convenience

    • I do not want to be slaving over a stove for hours or having to grind meat down for example. :)

  • A Company with a Great Reputation

    • Obviously, I do not want to support a company I do not trust. Look up Recall History and Reputation.

My Choice

Frozen Raw Dog Food was my choice! Then, I had to decide if I wanted to do the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet or Whole Prey Model. BARF allows ingredients other than that from an animal (veggies, fruits, etc), whereas whole prey is typically 80% meat, 10% organs, and 10% bone. I decided BARF, great acronym by the way, would be the easiest to transition to from kibble. There is a great divide in the Raw community as to which is “better”.

The Company I Chose

Darwin27sHZsig-copy1-600x218.png

  • Low to No Carbs

    • Carbs as fed 3-4%, as dry matter 12-13%, caloric contribution 9-10%

  • High Protein/ High Fat

    • As dry matter, 50% protein, 27% fat. Caloric contribution 90-91%

  • Easily Digestible and Nutritiously Dense

    • The hallmark of raw food. As least processed as you can get.

  • Convenience

    • Shipped to your house. In pre-portioned 8 oz packs.

  • A Company with a Great Reputation

    • I’ll give Darwin’s a B+ in this area. The one blemish is a recall of 3 batches of food in 2018 contaminated with Salmonella.

Darwin’s has a very easy website to order from, easy to set-up Auto-Ship, no delays in shipping so far, and all their nutritional information readily available. Am I married to them for life? No. I spent a good day researching and deciding on the company I wanted to choose and they came out on top. Another big factor is they are very economical compared to many other raw brands., some charging up to $10 a pound!

Raw Food Quick Hitters

  • Aren’t you worried about e. Coli, salmonella, bacteria, etc.? No. Dogs have shortened GI tracts and strong stomach acid that easily handles bacteria. Many dogs already have these bacteria living inside them with no problem, as it is mainly the overpopulation that causes the issues. The bigger risk is to humans. SO… the same way you handle raw chicken when you cook it, treat this food the same way. Wash your hands!

  • Is it gross? Sure, compared to dry kibble I would say it is “gross”. A dog chewing up raw meat isn’t as cute as crunching kibble. If they are messy eaters or do get it in their hair, use a wet paper towel/rag and wipe them off.

  • Does it stink? No, Darwin’s has kind of a grassy/mint smell.

  • Why don’t you feed your puppies raw? From a recent poll, only about 1/3 of people would even consider feeding their dog raw food. Transitioning a puppy from raw to kibble would result in a lot of upset GI and pups not wanting to eat.

How Much to Feed My Dog

I emailed Darwin’s and gave them Reba’s current weight, ideal weight, energy level, etc. and they recommended a feed amount. I also used a few other online raw food calculators and came up with one pound a day. This can be adjusted if your dog is acting lethargic, losing too much weight, or not losing enough weight.

    Cost

A 50 lb dog eating one pound a day would average $5/day or $150/month. If you want the organic produce option, then $7/day or $210/month.

The Food Toppers

A delicious crunchy treat pack full of Omega-3s and vitamins. Boosts energy and immune support, and dogs go crazy for it!

Bully Sticks!

Protein-Rich and supports healthy teeth and gums. Chewing is great mental stimulation for Pups!

pawTreats!

Freeze-Dried Raw, low calorie, limited ingredients. Breakable and Great for Training!

Exercise

Exercise is very much based off your Dog and what they want to do! Reba loves fetch, so we play fetch! If your dog likes to jog or go swimming, do that! The goal is to get the heart-rate up and burn calories!

For Reba, we play fetch 5 minutes a day, 2 or 3 sessions a day, 6 days a week. She sprints for the ball, so I know she is burning a lot of calories. She lets me know when to stop by laying down, instead of bringing me the ball. Haha! We also go on short walks, and if we hit a plateau on the weight loss we will increase our walks in length and speed!

Summary

Basically, get the nutrition right, do any exercise, and work from there! Reba has lost over 3 lbs in 4 weeks, which is 5% of her initial body weight! Good Luck! Look for a Blog Update in a Month! Meanwhile, follow Reba at @ReducingReba on Instagram!

The Newest Flock, I mean Pack Member!

20200413_120431 (1).jpg

Name: BubbleGum (Claire’s Pick!)

Age: 8 Weeks

Life Expectancy: 60+ Years

Species: Rose-Breasted Cockatoo/ Galah

Species Origin: Australia

Diet: Fresh Veggies and Fruit, Pellets, and Nuts

Cost: Same as a Gemma Mini Doodle 😭

Breeder: West Branch Aviary

Why?

Can we just start off with saying this is a rude question. 🤔 But 99% of people asking have never owned a nice parrot, so I will excuse it!

Most people don’t know I started my first business in middle and high school with rehabing and rehoming parrots and bred a couple clutches (litters for the dog people). Yes, most kids are partying, and I am busy dealing in the Parrot world. lol. But after graduating I had to move off to University, so this venture was ended.

BubbleGum

20200412_142743.jpg

The timing for adding a new parrot after University never seemed right until now.

Bubblegum, named by Claire, is a Galah. Named Bubblegum for her pink color, the ONLY color of gum Claire wants. They are known for their sweet nature, being social, and as one of the “quieter” cockatoos. Bubblegum is still technically a baby that I am handfeeding twice a day. I am working on weaning her onto her new diet and that should only take a couple weeks. She is also still working on getting all her feathers in!

Once Again, But Why???

😂. A well-trained parrot is an amazing pet. Most people do not have the time or dedication, so they end up screaming, plucking, and biting. However, I love the challenge of training a new species.

I hope to bring BumbleGum with me as I volunteer and train with our Therapy Pups. The VA, Daycares, Farmer’s Markets, etc. to educate on the species and let people know how therapeutic a well-behaved parrot is.

Also, she will help train the pups to be accustomed to small prey and prevent Fido from chasing squirrels. At least I hope so. 😂

All in all, they are great pets for specific people that will last a literal human lifetime if cared for properly. And they can dance. And Talk. And Fly…

The $800 vs $3000 Doodle Part One: Structure

Intro

People are often confused by the price difference in Doodles. I have seen them as low as $500 and as high as $5000. For this series, I am using estimated median values (in my belief) of $800 and $3000. You may find some breeders doing everything I write about correctly and are only charging $1500, which is great! The point is educating the public on why there is a price disparity and what should breeders be doing that actually increase the value of their puppies.

Structure

Credit: GANA

Credit: GANA

Goldendoodles and Labradoodles for 20+ years have been called mutts and mongrels by many people. However, it is undeniable they are one of the current top 5 most popular breeds in the USA. The reason I disagree with these terms is there is a collective body of breeders trying to breed to a standard AKA with a purpose in mind. Just like 99% of dog breeds were “created” by humans, the Goldendoodle is no different.

The Structure we aim for at Steel City Puppies is one of Optimal Health, Quality of Life, and Longevity. For instance, I could never breed English Bulldogs because of the high risk of hip dysplasia, breathing issues, and the inability to have natural births. I also could not breed 100+ lb Doodles because they will have shorter lives due to the heart to body size ratio.

My current goal is for my standard size pups to live to be 15+ years old, minis 18+ years old, and petites 20+ years old. Long healthy lives with no major medical problems!

The Importance

The biggest problem I am currently seeing bred in Doodles are short legs and very elongated bodies. Think of a dachshund aka Weiner Dog. Primarily this is seen in Mini Doodles because breeders are breeding them with too big of a height disparity between the parents. Imagine a 5 lb toy poodle that can fit in your pocket and it is used to inseminate a 70 lb golden retriever. This can result in these very elongated doodles that will more than likely develop joint issues and back problems, especially as they age.

Incorrect Doodle Structure. Note the elongated body with the short legs.

Incorrect Doodle Structure. Note the elongated body with the short legs.

Another example of structure is the rear angulation. Get this wrong and the dog will have decreased endurance because the muscles are not being used as efficiently and also the joints can suffer.

Conclusion

Find a breeder that has a deep knowledge of their dogs and is breeding for a healthy structure. Can you find a doodle breeder doing this and is only charging $800 for their pups? I doubt it. The breeder needs to have experience and knowledge, which typically comes at a cost. I would consider it an investment though when this can potentially save you thousands of $$$ in future medical bills and more importantly save your puppy from a life of suffering.

What you Need to Know about Doodle Grooming

Intro

Alright, I have seen so many terrible Doodle Grooms lately that I am neglecting all of my current emails to write this. This will cover what you need to do, what the groomer needs to do, and what they should not do.

Owner Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for getting your new puppy acquainted to common grooming tools. I recommend twice a week when your puppy is calm. If your breeder has already started on this, Congrats! you have found a fantastic breeder!

    • Slicker Brush and Comb

    • Blow dryer (do not use hot air)

  • You are responsible for getting your new puppy acquainted to common feelings.

    • Play/Touch their feet, so they become less sensitive over time.

    • I also will touch a puppy’s tail from an early age. Not tugging obviously.

    • Play/Touch their ears as well.

  • You are responsible for bringing in your puppy at an early age to the groomer. Most groomers require them to be fully vaccinated and 16 weeks old. We will go over the groom needed later.

  • You are responsible for preventing mats in the hair between grooming appointments. If you keep your Doodle’s hair at a 1/2” or longer length, you can not go 8 weeks between groomer appointments and not expect the hair to mat. Humidity, Rain, and Swimming all make the hair mat faster and worse.

    • Take your puppy in more often or keep the hair shorter or brush at home.

  • You are responsible for keeping a watch on your puppy’s ear canal. There needs to be good airflow to prevent infection. Use ear cleaner as necessary to prevent bacterial growth and bring to the vet if there is an infection.

  • You are responsible for knowing that a Groomer does not possess a “Magic Wand.” They can not turn your Pup’s curly hair into wavy or straight hair. They can not magically get out mats that are as big as a door mat. Play on words ;)

Groomer Responsibilities

  • First, do no harm. Always treat the animals with respect and patience, even if they are difficult. If they are too difficult to groom return them to the owner and explain the problem.

  • Always be honest and forthcoming. If something bad happens, accidentally poking the pup with scissors in the eye for example, tell the owner the truth.

  • Be patient with the customer. If the Groomer does not have the time to hear your concerns, what makes you think they will be patient with your puppy. This does not mean spend 20 minutes reviewing the groom you want your puppy to have, be thoughtful of the groomer’s time as well.

  • Listen to the customer and be knowledgeable in their skill. If the customer shows you a picture of a scissored doodle head, do not shave all the hair off. This is not talking about a matted doodle where shaving may be necessary.

Finding a Groomer

My ideal groomer is one who owns their own shop, has been grooming for 10+ years, has a lot of references, and you can tell enjoy what they do. Sorry, big box stores, I am not a fan of the majority of their grooming. It is always nice when you can have the same exact person grooming your Pup each time. They get to know what you like and your Pup will bond to them over the years. Ask friends with doodles, read Google Reviews, look at the pics on their FB/ IG, and also check the list at the Bottom of this Post for recommendations! I will continue to edit it over the years based off feedback and recommendations!

Your Puppy’s First Groom!!!

Milla11wks5.jpg

The first grooming appointment should happen between 12-20 weeks old. Ask your groomer their recommendation. The point of this groom is not even the groom really, but getting your puppy acquainted with a new environment that they will be spending a lot of time in.

This is what needs to be done:

  • Nails clipped or filed

  • Shave potty areas (do not have to shave a whole football field around the anus)

  • Shave hair between the paw pads (to grip slippery floors better)

  • Bath and BlowDry

  • Ear Cleaning and/or Plucking

  • Use Thinning Shears to remove hair growing in front of the eyes

    • DO NOT USE CLIPPERS FOR THIS

  • Can round off feet with shears, if desired

***Most important though, the first grooms need to be positive experiences with the puppy and groomer trusting each other a little more each time.

Repeat this FFT or Sanitary Trim as some call it Every 4-6 Weeks

The Real Doodle Groom (7+ Months Old)

Your Pup is now a Teenager or older. The 7-9 month old age is typically terrible as the adult hair is growing under the puppy coat and matting is a disaster. Can you tough it out and get the mats out or will you wimp out and have it shaved? Ok, actually I don’t blame you if you shave it because it can be time-consuming to keep up.

MY #1 GROOMING HACK: Buy a High Velocity Dryer! Give your pup a weekly bath and blowdry to prevent matting.

The Head

Doodles should have a face/ head shaped similar to below. NOTE: Curly hair doodles will not have the hair that falls nicely like the one on the left! It will be more fluffy like the one on the right!

bd0078e15a51dcdf286be2b79b864faf.gif
ce9cb4dd6846e86ca1a44a1dcce72686.jpg

If the Groomer does this, just LEAVE and never go Back!

If the Groomer does this, just LEAVE and never go Back!

The Body

You have two main options when choosing your doodle’s groom. Do you want the lower maintenance more sporty look or the higher maintenance longer hair show-stopping look?

457762_orig.jpg
9mthsStandCuteMamboWatermark-e1421271183861.jpg

Lower Maintenance

  • Cut the entire body and legs with a 3/8” or 1/2” Guide Comb

  • Preferable: Use a 3/8” on the body and a 1/2” or 5/8” on the legs, and then blend together

  • If matted or for ultimate low maintainence, use a #7 blade on body and legs

Higher Maintenance

  • Use a 1” guide comb on the entire body and legs

  • Preferable: Use a 1” guide comb on the body and scissor legs

Tail

A saber tail is the standard, so think of a golden retriever tail. It is NOT to be cut short and it is NOT to be shaved at the base. Doodle heads and tails are the most important for the “Doodle Look”.
